CO-FOR-IT

CO-FOR-IT (COalition for FORestation using Information Technologies) was the brainchild of CYENS Centre for Excellence with funding from their Island-Wide Perspective and Reach grants. Together with the researchers at CYENS and the folks at Kibris’a 300 Bin Agac, we’re exploring ways to use emerging technologies in climate initiatives. Our focus is forestation.

Our main goal is to develop an online platform that uses artificial intelligence (AI), computer vision (CV) and geospatial analysis, to help Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot stakeholders take care of the island’s forests together.

So far, we’ve exchanged best practices, mobilized volunteers, and raised environmental awareness in both of our communities. We hope to organize at least six forestation events (three on each side of the island) in 2022, using CYENS’ tools to determine what types of trees we should plant and where. When we’re done, we expect to have at least 10,000 new trees planted by 500 community volunteers.

This project is happening now. Want to help? Get involved now.

EU Solidarity Corps

The European Solidarity Corps empowers young people in Europe to collaborate at a local, grassroots level. Funding from the EUSC throughout 2021 helped us launch social media campaigns about climate change and the importance of trees, including a series of short videos on how to plant trees.

Our Nursery in Katydata

In a strategic collaboration with the Australian High Commission in Cyprus, we created our own tree nursery. Our 84-square-meter nursery is located in the foothills of the Solea Valley in northwest Cyprus, about 50 minutes from Nicosia. Construction was completed in three stages, from October 2021 to April 2022.
